Nature is Nurture

Marina Staubus is an Oklahoma native born in 1993 in Tulsa, OK and is a member of the Shawnee and Cherokee tribes.

Raised with a variety of pets in a house that felt like a jungle, Staubus developed a love for nature at an early age. She and her siblings were always encouraged to interact with plants and animals with curiosity and respect and were raised attending tribal ceremonial events that were about giving thanks to the Creator. The desire to document this cherished world naturally lead to drawing for young Marina.

In 2016, Staubus graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in Studio Art with a Minor in Art History. 2 years later, Staubus’s love for nature, and more specifically the ocean, drew her to the islands of Hawaii where she remained for 7 years. She fell in love with freediving and had a quenchless thirst for the underwater world. Her art exploded with imagery of the islands.

Staubus has participated in international exhibitions, solo and group shows, art education, live event painting and local art markets.

Marina sees her return to Tulsa, the town she was born, as an exciting chance to share her most thoughtful art with a special community as she leans into themes about Indigenous culture, big sky country, native plants and animals and so much more.

Feminine, hopeful, vibrant, organic. Staubus now primarily works in acrylic, creating chromatically complex, illustrative and surreal paintings of melded worlds. She hopes to remind us of the beautiful, wild and wonderful connection to every fish, flower and feather that each of us inherently holds.
